Labour’s proposed earthquake claims tribunal would “run roughshod over natural justice”, an insurance boss says.
As part of an election promise package for Canterbury, Labour leader Jacinda Ardern announced on Sunday that the party would set up a tribunal to hear unsettled claims from the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Insurance Council New Zealand chief executive Tim Grafton on Monday labelled the idea “a misconceived, poorly thought through seat-of-the-pants policy that runs roughshod over natural justice”.
He said insurers were settling claims as quickly as possible and there would be little left for a tribunal to do by the time it was set up in 2018.
