Stuart Fletcher will present to the Earthquake Amendment Bill Select Committee at the end of June.
Opportunity
Stuart has challenged the narrow scope of the Bill Amendments, encouraging the committee to take this opportunity to review the EQC ACT in its entirety.
Minister Woods and Minister Faafoi have both cited the need for us to all learn from the Canterbury earthquake events. The Amendment Bill proposal has some encouraging changes, however, the “How” these changes will be implemented has not been addressed.
Disaster Fund for all of New Zealand
The decimation of our once proud NZ National Disaster fund has arisen due to systematic failures within the Earthquake Commission, that if not addressed within the ACT, could well repeat in the future.
Risknet, within our submission, has suggested the consideration for new clauses to be included in any future Act. These address the root causes of many issues that spiralled out of control, resulting in long-lasting and irreversible issues for Canterbury homeowners.
We are deemed experts in this field and therefore can offer insight and strategic direction into how a future EQC may operate to serve its purpose effectively and efficiently.
Items Stuart will discuss at the committee include;
EQC review – historical context
2x New Clauses for consideration
The NZ National Disaster Fund
